Some Western Cape filling stations hit by a petrol shortage have been thrown a lifeline after a consignment of fuel was sent from Durban.

Last week the Fuel Retailers’ Association confirmed that there was a shortage in the Western Cape and Gauteng.

At the time, Shell SA spokesman Elton Fortuin said the shortage was caused by four factors:

-Production issues at several refineries countrywide.

-Rail logistical constraints in connection with transport.

-An increase in the demand for fuel after the 11-cent price drop.

-Extra demand as holidaymakers fill up in preparation for festive season travel.

Yesterday, Chevron SA’s spokeswoman Suzanne Pullinger said: “The situation remains the same, but our customers, BP, Shell and Engen, have received stocks.”

Fuel Retailers’ Association chief executive Reggie Sibiya said certain types of diesel and unleaded petrol (ULP95) were in low supply.

“Diesel and ULP95 are topping the product list of shortages,” he said. – Cape Argus
