After more than a fair amount of head-scratching, Guinness World Records has finally decided that the Bugatti Veyron 16.4 Super Sport is the fastest car in the world.

The arguments started about two weeks ago when Hennessey claimed that its 928kW hyper-car is now the fastest car in the world after a test run verified its top speed of 427.5km/h.

Although this falls short of the Veyron's 431km/h record run, Hennessey argued that it doesn't count because the Veyron that the man in the street can buy has an electronically limited top speed of 415km/h.

This argument clearly made sense to Guinness World Records, and the organisation revoked the Bugatti's record.

Now the record has been reinstated after Guinness conducted a thorough review with numerous external experts.

“Having evaluated all the necessary information, Guinness World Records is now satisfied that a change to the speed limiter does not alter the fundamental design of the car or its engine.”

So next time you're involved in that verbal pub brawl about the fastest car in the world, Bugatti is still the name you can mention with great authority.
