London - Forget racy red or canary yellow. When it comes to choosing the colour of a new car, our most popular choice is safe and traditional blue.

It has overtaken silver as our favourite vehicle colour, a survey shows.

More than 25 800 drivers were questioned by the AA. Twenty-one per cent said they would pick blue when choosing their next car. This was followed closely by silver, at 19 percent, and black with 18 percent. Red – a colour associated with sports cars such as Ferraris – is languishing at 14 percent.

Beige, the colour of the 1970s, is at the bottom of the list with a mere 1 percent.

The AA report says: “When it comes to reselling the car, there are now three clear contenders for most saleable colours – blue, silver and black.

“Sellers of purple or beige cars may struggle. Various police forces switched to silver cars a few years ago to cash in on better resale values.”

The AA said that many drivers believe lighter colours are easier to spot on the road and therefore safer.
