Johanneburg - What is the most you’d be prepared to spend on a set of tyres? How does R8.8-million grab you?

No, that’s not a misprint. As a publicity stunt a UK-based company called Z Tyre has produced a set of tyres with diamonds and 24-karat gold leaf on the surface, which Guiness World Records has recognised as the world’s most expensive car tyre.

No, you can’t get them at your local Supa Quick but someone has actually bought a set and it comes as no surprise that the buyer is from Dubai, with the Middle East well known for its garish displays of motorised wealth.

Z Tyre didn’t mention whether the price included a guard dog to protect the pricey rubber from ungodly attention when the car is parked.
