London - Man’s best friend is usually forgiven for chewing the odd sock or shoe. But what about an £80 000 (R1.45 million) Aston Martin?

Well, Luce the border collie-spaniel cross wasn’t just in the doghouse when she sank her teeth into her owner’s beloved sports car – she was given away to another family.

Builder Royston Grimstead arrived home to find something had been nibbling away at the front wheel arch of his Aston Martin DB9 Volante.

The 42-year-old said: “I saw Luce was covered in white stuff and I thought she had got a bird and it was feathers. But it was the fibreglass from the car. I just laughed. What else could I do?”

Luckily Mr Grimstead’s car, which he bought 15 months ago, was insured against the £3000 (R54 400) of damage done.

But it was the final straw for his three-year relationship with Luce. Mr Grimstead, of Chedzoy, Somerset, said he had already been considering re-homing her because she does not get on with his other dog.
