Cape Town – Emergency services provider ER24 on Tuesday reported attending to less collisions over the 2015 Easter period than
previous years, but said most accidents were of greater severity.
“ER24 noticed that the number of emergency calls attended to were lower than 2014, with just over 400 collisions attended to this year,” it said.
However, “although the call numbers were lower, the impact these collisions had on people were quite severe”.
Of the 30 fatalities ER24 paramedics attended to, some of the “tragic incidents” included the death of Free State Stars player Richard
Henyekane.
Henyekane was among the five people who died following a collision in the Free State between a truck and motor vehicle.
Another incident reported by ER24 was a collision between a bakkie and taxi, resulting in the death of 10 people and 12 injured in Limpopo.
The busiest branches over the long weekend were, in order, Durban, Johannesburg North, Johannesburg West, and Cape Town East, ER24 reported
