Monterey, California - Ford Performance has doubled its production plan for the Ford GT sports coupé from two to four years, after it was swamped with more than 6500 online applications for the original batch of 500 cars.

The announcement came just after hundreds of applicants received letters to tell them they'd been put on the waiting list, and thousands more were turned down flat.

The third year's production will be allocated to customers on the waiting list; those who didn't make the cut the first time around need only confirm and update their registration when applications for the fourth batch open early in 2018. And if there are still any GTs not spoken for at that stage, new applications will then be considered.

Making the announcement at the Pebble Beach Concours d'Elegance, Ford Performance global director Dave Pericak said: “While we can't build enough Ford GT's for everybody who has applied, we are going to produce more cars in an effort to satisfy some of our most loyal customers.”

Testing new technologies

This will also make it possible for the competition version of the all-carbon fibre supercar to race in both IMSA and the World Endurance Championship for another two years.

Ford executive vice-president and chief technical officer for product development Raj Nair explained: “The Ford GT has racing in its blood. Now the road car and the racer can continue side by side for four years, giving us more opportunity to test new technologies both on and off the track.”
