The Joburg metro police department was on high alert on Friday to ensure that those travelling out of the province for the start of the school holidays were on their best behaviour.

They aimed to ensure motorists abided by the road rules to minimise road deaths as heavy traffic was expected.

JMPD spokesman Wayne Minnaar said the officers would be manning major roads that led to other provinces as they expected huge traffic volumes on them.

These are the N1 to Limpopo, N3 to KwaZulu-Natal, the N1 south to Free State and the N12 to North West and the Northern Cape.

“Those are the roads that officers will pay particular attention to because many people will be using them to leave Gauteng.

“Motorists are urged to stick to the speed limit and ensure that everyone in their vehicles is buckled up, both in the front and back seats,” he said.

Minnaar said there was currently a huge educational drive to ensure that parents of children up to 3 years old ensured their children were in car seats.

He said one of the things they would do when they were out on the road today would be to inform motorists about the new legislation about baby seats.

There would be road blocks throughout the city checking for, among others, drugs, alcohol and vehicles' road worthiness.

“We will be starting today and continuing until next week,” he said.
