.

Parts for Chana models such as the Benni seen here are now sold through Geely SA.

Chana customers have been thrown a lifeline by the parent company of Geely South Africa, once Chana’s biggest competitor.

Geely sister company Parts Support will be supplying a complete range of Chana parts to vehicle owners affected by the recent bankruptcy of the South African Chana importer.

Although only selected Geely workshops will be able to service Chana vehicles, Parts Support will be able to supply all mechanical, service and accident parts, including components, to service and repair outlets throughout South Africa.

Parts Support managing director Dickie Marais said: “We will unfortunately not be able to honour any warranty claims on Chanas, but we can supply any parts their service technicians might need. Owners who would prefer to service or repair their vehicles themselves, can contact us for details on where to source parts.”

HIGH AND DRY

In September Changan SA, the local importers of Chinese brand Chana, went bankrupt, leaving almost 10 000 South African customers without any backup.

Chana entered South Africa in 2007 with a range of budget-priced cars and commercial vehicles, including the Benni hatchback and Star bakkie. The business ran into financial problems and was rescued in 2009 by the Johannesburg branch of China Construction Bank, with the distributorship taken over by Changan SA.

Despite plans to build a local assembly plant, continuing high debt led Changan SA to apply for voluntary liquidation. - Star Motoring
