Scared motorists are warning drivers to watch out for a real-life Ghost Rider haunting Cape roads.

Similar to the Nicolas Cage box-office flop, motorists say they have seen ghost cars on a quiet country road.

Several drivers interviewed by the Daily Voice say they were left speechless after scary encounters on the R354 between Matjiesfontein and Sutherland.

One dark and lonely Sunday night, Ronnie Jacobs and his girlfriend Margret Pienaar, both from Sutherland, were on their way to Cape Town.

The only lights on this dark road were the beams from his car and the moonlight.

Jacobs recalled: "I was driving at about 120km/h and was alone on the R354. Suddenly, after about 30 minutes, out of nowhere, I saw two speeding cars in my rear-view mirror.

"I told my girlfriend I'd better give way or the cars would smash into us."

Jacobs quickly pulled off the road at a nearby T-Junction and waited for the cars he had spotted behind him moments earlier. But nstead there was nothing, only dead silence and darkness.

"It scared the hell out of us," he said bluntly.

He couldn't explain where the two cars disappeared to as there were no dirt roads or off-ramps they could have taken.

Another driver, Joseph Shadow, 51, and son Jason, 23, had a similar hair-raising experience.

Joseph Shadow said: "A week ago, in broad daylight, we were driving to Sutherland. Near the farm Dwars in die Weg, the road takes a couple of turns and I could see two cars approaching us.

"I told my son to slow down because at the corner we would come face-to-face with the oncoming cars.

"As we took the turn I saw the cars approaching - but within seconds they just disappeared."

Shadow says neither he nor his son can explain the vanishing cars.

This isn't the only stretch of road haunted by spirits.

The road between Uniondale and Willowmore in the Karoo is said to be haunted by the "Uniondale phantom hitchhiker". It is believed a young girl who went missing while hitchhiking still haunts motorists - especially bikers - along this quiet road.

She is described as young, Afrikaans-speaking and very pretty, with tangled dark hair, barefoot and wearing a white linen dress. Riders who have stopped for her say she asks for a lift to Uniondale but suddenly vanishes from the rear seat of the bike just before reaching the town. - Daily Voice
