Johannesburg - A taxi driver, who was allegedly intoxicated, caused a scene at a Joburg car dealership when he fell asleep and ploughed his vehicle into a stationary car.

On Monday morning, the minibus was still on top of a Volkswagen Tiguan at Fury Hyde Park on Jan Smuts Avenue.

The front of the taxi had landed on the bonnet of the car, smashing the windscreen, the front section and the interior.

Cuan Gouws, the manager of the used cars division at the branch, said the damage to the vehicle was so extensive that the car might have to be written off.

“The damages amount to over R100 000,” he said.

The crash happened late on Sunday night when the driver apparently fell asleep at the wheel, smashing the taxi into the vehicle parked outside the dealership for display purposes.

Gouws said the driver attempted to flee the scene but a security guard at the dealership ran after him and called the police.

He said the man was arrested and that a case of drunken driving has been opened.

Social media users expressed shock and outrage after pictures of the taxi collision began circulating online.

Pieter Bosch Botha tweeted: “I hope they revoke the driver’s licence for good! We have too many reckless and dangerous taxi drivers on our roads.”

There was also no shortage of the humour and wit South Africans are notorious for with many people making light of the unusual crash.

Among them was DJ and radio personality Euphonik who tweeted the picture along with the caption: “When ur eyeballs deep in kak.”

The sentiments were echoed by @markmcn1 who posted: “SANTACO (SA National Taxi Council) preparing its drivers for when they have their own airline!”

Police spokesman Warrant Officer Richard Munyai said the taxi driver would appear in court on Tuesday.
