London - Captain Slow has now practically confirmed that he will not be going back to Top Gear without Jeremy Clarkson.

Speaking to MediaGuardian, James May said that if Richard Hammond and himself were to pair up with a “surrogate Jeremy” it would simply be “lame”.

“It has to be the three of us. You can't just put a surrogate Jeremy in and expect it to carry on. It would be forced. I don't believe they would be stupid enough to try that.”

May also told MediaGuardian that trying to do Top Gear without Jezza would be “a bloody tough call” although he didn't rule out returning to the BBC at some point in the future, implying that the trio might one day come back as a team.

Meanwhile, Clarkson has hinted that he will be working on another car show. In his Sunday Times column this week, he said: “I have lost my baby but I shall create another. I don't know who the other parent will be or what the baby will look like, but I cannot sit around any more organising my photograph albums.”

Of course there's no word on whether May and Hammond would team up with him in this project, but given the hilarious chemistry that existed between them at Top Gear, it's hard to imagine the trio not teaming up again.

For any of you who might have been living in a cave for the last few months, Jeremy Clarkson was sacked from the BBC's Top Gear in March following a spat in which he is believed to have physically and verbally attacked producer Oisin Tymon.
