More than 40 people were arrested for driving in the emergency lane on Beyers Naude Drive in Johannesburg on Thursday morning.

Gauteng traffic police department spokeswoman Busaphi Nxumalo said most of those arrested were taxi drivers - who are notorious for using the emergency lane as a ‘rat run’ to get ahead of traffic, particularly in this area - but there were also some private car owners among them.

The drivers were all arrested for reckless driving and taken to the Honeydew police station - which shows new-found resolve on the part of law-enforcement officers, who have in the past been wary of attempting to stop a number of taxi operators for the same infringement because of the very real risk that the taxi drivers would gang up on them. - Sapa

And Cyril says the handful of car drivers who let themselves get sucked into driving like idiots should hang their heads in shame.
