VW Polo Vivo is still South Africa's biggest selling car.
New car sales in South Africa were up in June but bakkie sales were weak, says the National Association of Automobile Manufacturers of SA.
But overall, new vehicles sales for the month were up 13 percent compared to June 2010, to 44 880 - 86 percent to dealers, eight percent to car rental companies, four percent to demo fleets and three percent to government.
Export sales grew by 24 percent over June 2010 to 25 295.
New car sales in June were 17 percent up to 31 440, thanks to relatively low interest rates and more accommodating bank managers - in fact car prices are going down in real terms as manufacturers hold price increases below the inflation rate.
That didn't help bakkie and minibus sales, however, which were down two percent compared to June last year.
And, in the medium term, more price increases, rising energy costs and Gauteng's freeway toll charges are expected to put the brakes on vehicles sales.
Naamsa has also taken a stand on the current nationalisation debate, saying calls for expropriation are damaging because they discourage investment and, ultimately, job creation.
"It's important to stay with tried, trusted and successful economic policies", it said. - Sapa
