Johannesburg - Licensing Department offices reopened for business this morning after a strike by workers left motorists seeking to renew their licenses frustrated yesterday.

An employee at the Sandton office confirmed at 8am on Tuesday that they were operating as normal, with spokesman for the Joburg Metropolitan Police Department (JMPD) Wayne Minnaar concurring.

“We don’t foresee any problems,” Minnaar said.

Workers suspended services and spent yesterday in a union meeting to air their grievances over job positions that were advertised externally instead of internally, Minnaar added.

The legal officer of the SA Municipal Workers’ Union, Jack Mokalapa, confirmed on Tuesday morning that the strike had been suspended pending feedback they expect to receive from the Department of Public Safety and Security on Thursday.

“We can call it a suspension of a strike action pending a feedback, but we still have a right to suspend services again,” Mokalapa said.

The strike left many people fuming, with pensioner Carol Rundle visibly frustrated after queuing in Randburg for a long time.

“I can’t stand for hours in a queue. It is a problem to renew our licenses now,” she said.
