Something like a BMW 650i would be on the cards if you had to rent a car from a luxury rental company for around R3600 per day.
It's just been revealed that Minister in the Presidency Collins Chabane and his deputy spent almost R550 000 on car hire between March 2010 and July 2011.
In a parliamentary reply to the Democratic Alliance, Chabane revealed that he spent R159 000 during this period, equating to about R3600 in car hire a day.
Deputy Minister Dina Pule spent R387 000, amounting to about R2500 a day.
No one's come forward on exactly what cars were hired, but our own research shows that R3600 a day could get you something far from ordinary. While the best you'll get from an ordinary car rental company is a Mercedes E-Class for R1156 per day, our suspicion is that a premium car rental company was used.
Status Luxury Vehicles, for instance, offers a BMW 650i Convertible for R3680 per day while Avis Luxury Cars could give you a Land Rover Discovery for R3230 or a Mercedes S-Class for R4020 per day - perhaps a similar vehicle to that was in order if discounts were given.
DA public service and administration spokesman Geordin Hill-Lewis said such “reckless spending” was being condoned because of provisions in the ministerial handbook.
“This handbook allows ministers to live a life of luxury at the expense of ordinary South Africans.”
He said Public Service and Administration Minister Roy Padaychie should ensure long awaited amendments to the handbook were presented and implemented immediately to curb excess spending. -Sapa

Our ministers are clearly milking the cow dry. How can you give these people such budgets, if they have not managed much in their lives. Most of them can't even manage their family affairs. Amazing SA is

Perhaps it is part of the "tender" syndrome. It was maybe an ordinary car at a premium price. Please let us know what car it was, and who pocketed the cash.

I really do not understand what is wrong with our parliament? Why is that such things are not addressed once and for all so that the country can move forward. How could we trust them to formulate laws when they cannot clean their house first? Why such loopholes in the ministers handbook?

disgusting. But that seems to be the trend by all Politicians in any part of the World. We have that in the western world too. Looks like they all go to the same school where accountability is voodoo for them. Shame!

Basically we are all being mercilessly looted. I decided a couple of years ago to "manage" my tax affairs until we get a government that does not stela from us. I would advise others to do the same. Choke off the source, and these pigs will have to feed at a different trough.
