Mbombela - More than 250 drivers were arrested in Mpumalanga during June for various offences.

Provincial community safety department spokesman Joseph Mabuza said on Tuesday: “The culture of disregard for traffic violations needs to be curbed in order to address road safety in the province.

“Those who drive recklessly and negligently often endanger the lives of other road users.”

Traffic officials stopped and checked 206 324 vehicles during the month.

Of these 92 544 were heavy motor vehicles, 1895 were buses and 14 349 were minibuses.

As part of efforts to address overloading, 80 830 vehicles were weighed, with 914 impounded and 1139 vehicles discontinued as they were not roadworthy.

MEC Vusi Shongwe welcomed the arrests, for offences ranging from overloading, speeding, drunk driving, and failure to pay traffic fines, to not appearing in court.

He believed prosecution of those arrested would send a warning to other drivers to behave appropriately on the road.
