Murray's midget aces crash test

Alright, this little motorised midget, which is the creation of none other than Gordon Murray Design in the UK, does not look very safe even by the widest stretch of imagination - but the T.27 Electric City Car in question has just aced it first crash test.

Although the test was conducted by Gordon Murray Design, it was carried out at the Motor Industry Research Association in the UK and it falls in line with the mandatory EEC 40% offset deformable barrier front high speed impact.

According to its maker, the T.27 came through with flying colours with zero cabin intrusion and the measured results being extremely close to those predicted by computer simulation.

This result is seen as a great endorsement for Gordon Murray Design's iStream manufacturing system, which delivers reduced weight and cost with increased levels of safety.

Furthermore, the iStream composite monocoque brings Formula One technology to mass production vehicles (what else would you expect from Murray?) with significantly higher specific energy absorption rates compared with conventional-bodied cars.

The T.27's engineering director Frank Coppuck said: "This crash test represents a major milestone in vehicle safety and in the history of Gordon Murray Design.

"It clearly demonstrates that cars built using iStream technology can achieve low weight, cost and significant reductions in energy usage during manufacturing without compromising safety."

While the on-sale date for this vehicle is not known at this stage, the company claims it'll have running prototypes of the vehicle running around by the second quarter of this year.
