Johannesburg - In a conversation with a car enthusiast at the office, it emerged that petrolheads in most townships in South Africa were big on detailing cars and then competing in amazing driving stunts.

This car lover even said that some representatives from BMW in Germany once said they were perplexed at how South Africans transformed their cars from being general luxury vehicles to those that could be dangerously driven and a part of the next Fast and Furious film – without the help of visual effects.

This came as no surprise, as the old BMW 3 Series, known as Gusheshe, was commonly used as the car of choice when it came to pimping and spinning in the ’hood.

Motoring channel Ignition has caught onto this trend and is giving viewers access to this dangerous hobby from the comfort of their own homes, in the show Kasi Kar Culture.

While a lot of things still need to change in South African townships, including the standard of living and service delivery, there is still room for an expensive sport such as spinning - which entails flooring the accelerator to get the rear wheels spinning and then drifting the car around in big, smoky circles. And yes, it’s dangerous, especially if the tyres suddenly grip and the car veers off unpredictably.

The people who enjoy doing these sort of stunts have another favourite, whereby they leap on to fast-moving cars.

Kasi Kar Culture will to show you not only what motivates these drivers but also how the cars are modified for this type of performance - and what it costs.

Kasi Kar Culture airs on Ignition TV (DStv Channel 189) every Saturday at 7.30pm.
