New Top Gear 'a poisoned chalice'

London - Jodie Kidd recently offered a dignified explanation as to why she would not - as was widely thought - be featuring in the revamped Top Gear, citing family commitments.

So the former supermodel and mother of one will doubtless be none too pleased to learn that her foot-in-mouth-prone older brother Jack has driven a coach and horses through her carefully honed public pronouncements.

Former polo player Jack, 42, who runs the family’s estate Holders in Barbados, this week launched an extraordinary broadside on social media, aimed directly at the show’s new presenter, Chris Evans.

Referring to the news that his sister would not feature in the post-Jeremy Clarkson line-up when the show returns to our screens next year, he commiserated with Jodie on Facebook: “A poisoned chalice ... Many people tell me that Evans is a nightmare to work with and will not be able to pull off the Top Gear show.

“Better you do not crash with the little ginger who only has a face for radio.” Such an attack on the Radio 2 Breakfast host appears to suggest that Evans played a role in vetoing his sister.

It has since been reported that Evans is keen for his friend and Radio 2 colleague Zoe Ball to be appointed as his co-presenter.

Last week Kidd, who has been spotted having discussions with Evans and his predecessor Jeremy Clarkson around London, gave an interview in which she appeared at pains to indicate that she had turned down theopportunity.

“If I were to accept Top Gear it would be completely all-consuming,” she said at the time.

“Top Gear is the most brilliant show on this planet but it would just take over your soul. That would be it.

“Through ups and downs and lefts and rights I have got to an amazing place where everything is finally balanced, and balanced for my family, too.”
