Sunderland, UK - Nissan makes a new Qashqai every 62 seconds - making it the fastest-manufactured car in British history.
More than 500 000 have come off the company’s production line in Sunderland in 21 months, beating the record of the Austin/Morris 1100/1300, which took 29 months to reach half a million.
The Sunderland plant employs more than 6700 people and makes the Qashqai, Note, Juke and the electric Leaf. Production of the Infiniti Q30 begins next year.
More than 8 million vehicles have been built at Sunderland since 1986 with 80 percent of production exported to 100 countries.
Some 500 238 vehicles were made last year alone - with one in three cars built in the UK a Nissan. The firm has invested £100 million (R2.1bn) in the new Juke, which will secure thousands of jobs beyond 2020.
UK car bosses said investment across the industry has already broken the £2 billion (R42bn) barrier for the first eight months of 2015.
Nissan’s award-winning Qashqai has proved a phenomenal success with families and it has been dubbed the ‘cash cow’ because it has made so much money for Nissan.
Last year nearly 50 000 Qashqais – priced from £18,265 to £28,500 – were sold, making it the UK’s best-selling sports-utility vehicle and the sixth best seller overall.
