Don’t pay your e-toll charges, and you won’t be allowed to renew your vehicle licence disc.

Department of Transport spokesman Tiyani Rikhotso on Tuesday night said it would be considered in the same light as not paying your traffic fines, which was a cause for disallowing the renewal of a vehicle licence.

“People who have any form of traffic infringement must address that outstanding matter, otherwise they cannot gain access to any traffic services,” he said.

The department planned to implement this by taking an amendment to the cabinet in the next few months. “The (transport law enforcement and related matters amendment bill) will be a form of enforcement for people who ignore the whole process (of e-tolls),” Rikhotso said.

He said this was a further step towards moving away from using criminalisation to process traffic infringements, rather making it an administrative issue with offenders barred from services. - The Star
