The arrest of radio DJ Gareth Cliff for speeding has been welcomed by Gauteng community safety MEC Faith Mazibuko.

She said: “By excessive speeding, the motorists are not only putting their lives in danger, but also endangering other road users.”

She called on motorists, irrespective of their social status, to be cautious on the roads and warned that law enforcement would be on the lookout for those who broke the rules.

“Our roads are not a racecourse. For those that want to race they must make use of places such as Kyalami - not our public roads.”

Cliff was arrested after he was caught driving in his black Range Rover Evoque, similar to the one shown above, at 182km/h in a 120km/h zone on the R21 near Pretoria on Tuesday night.

“I did something really stupid.”

He was later released on bail and appeared in the Centurion Magistrate's Court on Wednesday.

The case was postponed to March 15 because there was an inquiry into whether his licence should be suspended. The case will continue in the Pretoria Magistrate's Court.
