It's not only Gauteng's e-tolls that have been getting people worked up lately - now a toll plaza on the N4 near Swartruggens in the North West has become the centre of a Cosatu protest.

The union was set to stage a protest on Friday against that plaza's toll fee of R71, demanding that it be reduced to R20.

Cosatu's North West provincial secretary Solly Phetoe explains: “We are in total opposition to the existence of this toll gate and its continued price hikes,” he said.

Cosatu also wanted the construction of an alternative route parallel to the toll road, for the benefit of the poor.

It furthermore sought the immediate resumption of the repair work on the roads connecting Lindleyspoort and Boshoek, and Koster and Lichtenburg.

“We want to put it on record that the road that goes through Tlokweng and Pella is not an alternative to this road. It is the road that connects the two villages with Zeerust and Rustenburg, the towns where the people of these villages shop,” Pheto said. -IOL & Sapa
