The Volkswagen Polo won the overall sales race in June, with 2994 units sold.

Johannesburg - South Africa's new vehicle sales continued to slide in June, albeit at a slower rate. While May saw a rather hefty 9.2 percent year-on-year drop, June ended with a 2.3 percent decline over the same month last year, according to figures released by Lightstone Auto.

The month saw 52 837 vehicles finding new homes, of which 83.8 percent were through dealer channels while 8.3 percent went to the rental industry, 3.5 percent to government and 4.4 percent to corporate fleets.

In its monthly statement Naamsa said it expected the local market to continue facing headwinds over the short to medium terms, in contrast to international regions like Europe, North America and China, which are in a state of expansion. This, at least, should help boost South Africa's export sales.

STRIKE DAMAGE

Naamsa also warned that the current strike in the steel and engineering industry would increase the risk of SA's economy dipping into recession and that local vehicle production and exports would be affected if the industrial dispute is not resolved within two weeks.

Taking a look at June's sales figures, Toyota took a solid lead with 9825 units sold, compared to VW's 9020 and Ford's 6110. GMSA followed in forth place with 5491 sales, ahead of AMH/AAD (4906) and Nissan (3943).
