SA's new vehicle market registered another double-digit decline in June 2016, with overall sales down 10.6 percent over the same month last year.

A total of 44 939 vehicles were sold last month, down 10.6 percent from the 50 250 that found homes in the same month last year. Despite stronger than usual rental sales of 16.8 percent, passenger vehicle sales were down 11.7 percent year-on-year, versus 9.7 percent for light commercial vehicles and 8.4 percent for medium commercials, while the heavies actually recorded a slight increase of 2.6 percent. Export sales saw a marginal 1.4 percent decline.

Naamsa said it expected vehicle sales to remain under pressure for the short to medium term due to vehicle price inflation, low consumer confidence a low rate of finance approvals.

Yet the association also hinted that things could be about to turn for the better:

"However, a number of recent key economic indicators appeared to be moving in the right direction including the substantial improvement in South Africa's trade balance and lower than anticipated producer price inflation. This augured well for interest rate stability over the medium term," Naamsa said.

"A further positive feature was the welcome rise in the Purchasing Managers' Index, a leading economic indicator, which had now remained above the 50 point mark for the last four months. This heralded a possible improvement in business activity and the economy in coming months."
