South Africa's vehicle market continues buck the gloomy economic trends, with October's sales tally being 10.5 percent up year-on-year.
According to Naamsa, 57 845 units found homes during the month, of which 41 621 were passenger cars and 13 682 were light commercial vehicles. 77.9 percent of sales were through the dealer network, 13.6 percent were to the rental industry, 4.9 percent to government and 3.6 percent were flogged via corporate fleets.
“Against the backdrop of weak momentum in the overall economy, the performance of the South African automotive sector continued to surprise on the upside,” Naamsa said in its release.
USUAL SUSPECTS UPFRONT
Toyota took the lion's share, moving 12 139 vehicles and Volkswagen followed with sales of 10 125.
The Japanese carmaker had a better-than-usual month with its Indian-built Etios, which sold 2625 units, but it wasn't enough to conquer VW's Polo Vivo (3341).
The top 50 sellers are listed below but, as usual, say a little prayer that Hyundai, Kia, Mercedes-Benz, Daihatsu and friends will start disclosing their individual figures one of these days.
