The South African motor industry's growth spurt shows no signs of waning, with July's sales figures reflecting an 18.34 percent increase over the same month last year.

According to Naamsa, 54 067 vehicles were sold during the last month, a 4.22 percent rise over the preceding month.

The passenger car and light commercial vehicle segments both showed positive gains, but of economic concern is that sales of MCVs, buses and trucks showed a 4.9 percent decline.

Naamsa believes the industry remains on track for growth of around 10 percent for 2012, supported by historically low interest rates, a competitive trading environment and improved demand for credit by households among other factors.

On the sales charts, the VW Polo Vivo (with 3449 units) took the top spot usually occupied by the Toyota Hilux, which it self came a distant second at 2781. Toyota's Etios still lags in fourth place (1753 units) behind the new-shape VW Polo (2459).

See our list below for the 50 best sellers and, as always, note that Kia, Hyundai, Daihatsu and GWM figures, and Mercedes-Benz’s individual figures, were not reported to Naamsa.
