South Africa's vehicle industry continues to flourish, with June sales figures showing solid double-digit growth. According to Naamsa's figures, total vehicle sales amounted to 51 891, which is 15.6 percent ahead of the same month last year.
Sales of passenger cars showed a 14.3 percent year-on-year improvement while light commercial vehicles reflected an increase of 22.1 percent over June last year.
Notably, June's daily selling rate remained at five-year-high levels.
Naamsa believes that factors such as historically low interest rates, improvements in vehicle affordability in real terms, new model introductions and pre-emptive buying ahead of anticipated price increases due to currency weaknesses were among the factors that boosted sales during the month.
On the actual sales charts we see that VW's Polo Vivo managed to fend off its new arch rival, Toyota's Etios, in the latter's first full sales month although the Toyota still did well to land up third in the passenger car sales race and broke through the 2000 unit barrier.
As before, we cannot provide individual sales figures for Mercedes-Benz, Kia or Hyundai as they are not reported at present.
