A security guard is due to appear in court today for allegedly shooting a taxi driver dead in a fit of road rage in Soweto, Johannesburg, police have confirmed. He would appear in the Protea Magistrate's Court, Warrant Officer Nonhlanhla Khumalo said.

The man was arrested on Sunday after police received information from local residents, including the licence plate of the car he was driving.

Khumalo said media reports that the arrested man was the owner of Mokoteledi Security were false. “It is not the owner who was arrested, it was a security guard.”

Taxi driver, Zakhele Tshabalala, 39, allegedly cut off the security company's van near Mdlalose Street in Protea Glen on Saturday evening. The driver of the van stopped, got out and went to the driver's side window of the Toyota minibus.

He allegedly took out his pistol and shot Tshabalala in the chest and head, as well as a man on the passenger side. Tshabalala died on the scene. His passenger was in a critical condition. -Sapa
