Johannesburg - A high-level investigation is being conducted by the Johannesburg Metro Police Department into allegations that Telkom chief executive Sipho Maseko drove his Range Rover with cloned number plates.

The Star revealed last week that Maseko used the number plates TVL 414 GP, which belonged to his previous vehicle, also a black Range Rover, on a new one he purchased.

It was only when businessman Mabena Motshoane, who now owns Maseko’s old car, started receiving fines that he started pressurising the JMPD to inspect new vehicle.

Motshoane received about R30 000 in traffic fines in his name.

Eventually, after at first refusing the JMPD permission to inspect the car at his Houghton home, Maseko agreed to take it in for inspection, but by then, the number plates had been changed to 414 TVL GP.

JMPD spokesman Wayne Minnaar said a docket would be sent to the SAPS and to the director of public prosecutions as soon as the investigation is completed by its number plates investigation unit.

Minnaar said the fines would be transferred out of Motshoane’s name once the “rightful” person who accumulated the fines was identified. “Unfortunately, Mr Motshoane will not be able to sell the car until the legal process is finalised,” he said.

Maseko told The Star he had personalised the plates because he was nostalgic for the former Transvaal and hence he wanted to keep the TVL in them.
