Cape Town - A five-year trial period for drivers to “prove themselves” before they are licensed as in Australia will reduce road fatalities, according to Wester Cape Transport and Public Works MEC Robin Carlisle.

Addressing the Cape Town Press Club yesterday, Carlisle

said, “In Australia, they have a well-trained police force and if we had this and if our police were trained, motivated and managed efficiently we would be able to stretch resources.

“Moving offences such as crossing barrier lines, failure to buckle up and not adhering to the speed limit are offences we see on our roads every day.

“We are also looking into safer cars and how fast they are, not only their braking systems or number of airbags.” -Cape Times
