Pretoria - Transport minister Dipuo Peters has announced plans to introduce regulations restricting the movement of trucks weighing more than 9000kg on public roads.

In a statement released on Wednesday, Peters said: "This intention is in response to the increase in the number of road carnages that involves goods vehicles on the South African roads."

NOT DURING PEAK PERIODS

Under the proposed regulations, heavy goods vehicles would not be allowed on public roads on weekdays between 6am and 9am and from 5 pm to 8 pm. This would not apply on weekends and public holidays, Peters said. Emergency vehicles were excluded.

Ministry spokesman Ishmael Mnisi said the regulations would be released for comment before being promulgated. The department was ready to engage on the regulations, he said, and it was confident they were workable.

"With use of inter-modal transport and better planning, the regulations can work."
