Pretoria - As part of Women’s Month, local authorities held an all-female joint law enforcement operation on the notorious Moloto Road on Tuesday.
More than 120 officers mounted a huge roadblock on the infamous road, focusing on vehicle inspections, but also educating road users on safety measures.
They were mainly women officers from the city's metro police, the SA Police Service, the Gauteng traffic police, the South African National Defence Force, the Road Traffic Management Corporation and the Department of Health.
The operation was also intended to create awareness on safety measures when travelling with children.
Gauteng traffic department spokeswoman Busaphi Nxumalo said the aim was to ensure fatal accidents were kept to a minimum.
“Moloto Road is known for the high number of fatal accidents, so as part of the Women’s Month, we decided to conduct roadblocks on major roads in the province.
“We also wanted to focus our energies on Putco buses, because a great number of them are not roadworthy and are involved in a lot of accidents on this road.”
More than 300 vehicles were stopped and checked, she said. Officials also checked for traffic violations and vehicle and driving licences.
“We plan more operations of this nature, especially leading up to October - transport month,” Nxumalo said. “We want to ensure at least 88 percent of vehicles on our province's roads are roadworthy to reduce fatalities.”
