Johannesburg - BMW is not just embracing its dark side, but showing it off with these two new special editions based on the X5 M and X6 M, and they’re coming to South Africa in October, although you’ll have to hurry as just 25 of them have been allocated to our market.

Before you ask, there are no performance mods involved here, but then the standard 4.4-litre V8 turbopetrol motor, credited with 423kW and 750Nm, is not exactly lacking in the potency department now is it?

But what sets the X5 and X6 Black Fire Editions apart is the styling, inside and out, which takes the black-is-the-new-black approach all over, from Sapphire Black Metallic exterior paint to black grille surrounds, black 21-inch wheels and carbon mirror caps.

Inside you’ll find plenty of piano black surfacing as well as a pair of fully-electric M multifunctional seats that are upholstered in a combination of black and red Merino leather, and, at no cost, buyers can opt for an Alcantara-covered steering wheel.

As with the standard model, power goes to all four wheels through an eight-speed automatic gearbox and rear-biased all-wheel-drive system, and there’s a multi-mode DSC stability system with varying degrees of tolerance for drifting.

According to BMW, both are capable of sprinting from 0-100km/h in just 4.2 seconds.
