Toyota’s entry into the World Rally Championship from next year will have an exciting spin off for customers as the company has just announced that it’s working on a road-going performance version of the Yaris.

While it won’t be as potent as the WRC car, Toyota does promise that the hot Yaris will benefit from the “experience gained from its full-blooded return to the World Rally Championship”.

The car is also expected to use the Gazoo name in honour of its motorsport outfit and the official sketch above tells us that it will be built around the three-door Yaris bodyshell.

There’s no word on engines or any other technical details at this stage, but word on the street is that it will be powered by a 1.6-litre turbopetrol engine, hopefully adequately tuned to keep up with the 147kW Renault Clio RS and 141kW VW Polo GTI. Watch this space.
