The first pictures and some juicy details about the McLaren P1 have been released ahead of the supercar's world debut at the Geneva Motor Show next week.

This spiritual successor to the legendary McLaren F1 road car is billed as the quickest and most technologically advanced car ever to hail from the UK.

Being a child of the eco age, the supercar is powered by a petrol-electric hybrid powertrain but makes no compromises on the performance front.

Its mid-mounted 3.8-litre twin-turbo V8 is mated to a lightweight electric motor to give the car a total system output of 674kW and 900Nm - which should fire it from 0-100km/h in less than three seconds and on to a top speed of 350km/h.

A seven-speed dual-clutch gearbox sends power to the rear wheels.

The green side of the equation is a set of batteries that can be plugged in to a wall socket and charged within two hours. When fully charged, these batteries are said to allow the McLaren to drive for 20km (at 48km/h) emission free.

The P1 is set to go on sale later this year with a price tag, in the UK, of £866 000 - which equates to around R11.5-million. Exclusivity is guaranteed, with just 375 units set to be built.
