REVEALED: McLaren 675 LT 'Longtail' Spider

By: IOL Motoring Staff

McLaren has unleashed the Spider version of its 675 LT 'Longtail', offering all the extra potency and weight-saving of its most hardcore Super Series model in an open-top format.

As with the coupé, numbers are strictly limited to just 500 units and those lucky clients will enjoy the same performance mods that apply to the tin-top LT, in addition to the wind-in-hair joy enabled by its three-piece retractable hardtop.

Powering this Spider is a heavily-revised (as in 50 percent of components replaced) 3.8-litre twin-turbo V8 that pushes 496kW at 7100rpm and 700Nm from 5000rpm onwards.

Off the mark, the Spider is just 0.2 seconds slower than its slightly lighter coupé sibling, with the 0-100 run dispatched in just 2.9 seconds and 0-200km/h achieved in 8.1s, according to McLaren, while the claimed top speed is 326km/h.

As with the tin-top, a glut of lightweight materials reduces overall weight by 100kg, to achieve a dry weight of just 1270kg, while its dynamic ability is further enhanced by various aerodynamic features, including a large front splitter and 'Longtail' airbrake, hence the name.

That badge also harks back to the 1997 McLaren F1 GTR race car, which earned that nickname as a result of its unique stretched silhouette.

See and hear the new Spider in the video below:
