Stuttgart, Germany - Mercedes-Benz has released a sneak preview of a new ultra luxury coupé in a sign that Daimler is continuing its push upmarket to turn up the heat on BMW.

The photograph showes the outline of a sleek red sports car with the tagline: “Hot & Cool - Almost 6 metres of ultimate luxury”.

Mercedes isn’t saying whether this is a concept or destined for production, but a spokesman has said more will be revealed at the Pebble Beach Concours D'Elegance in Monterey, California, in August.

Pebble Beach is one of the world’s most prestious concours, limited to 200 of the most prized cars in the world, attracting the world's top car collectors.

Speculation buzzing around the cybergarage is that the show car is based on the new S-Class coupé, just as the Maybach S600 is based on the new S-Cless, and will be aimed directly at the Roll-Royce Phantom two-door, which is just about six metres long.

Product offensive

We need hardly remind you that Rolls-Royce is owned by Daimler’s arch-rival BMW and that Mercedes wants to overtake rival BMW to claim the title of biggest selling luxury carmaker, with a product offensive to give its cars a more upmarket appeal, including the revival of the Maybach and Pullman brands.
