Midrand - GWM South Africa has added a new entry-level variant to its H5 SUV line-up. It's called the H5 City and priced at R244 900, GWM head honcho Warren Olsen says it's "a full-size SUV at a compact crossover price".

Like its more expensive stablemates the H5 City is built on a ladder frame chassis with a 2700mm wheelbase and nearly 200mm of ground clearance - giving it more rough-road capability than some more car-based competitors, yet it comes with 17" alloy rims, indicator repeaters in the side mirrors and a tailgate spoiler.

Motorvation is courtesy of GWM's familiar 2.4-litre, four-cylinder petrol engine, rated for 100kW at 5200 revs and 200Nm at 4000rpm, driving the rear wheels via a five-speed manual

REVISED INTERIOR

The H5 City has a revised dashboard, with piano-black plastic trim on the centre section and door pulls, and sliver trim accents throughout the cabin. The controls for the audio and aircon have been updated and there a new centre console with two cup holders.

Standard kit includes automatic climate control, a radio/CD player with USB/aux ports, front and rear foglights, rain-sensing wipers, automatic headlights, dual front airbags, ABS, Isofix rear child seat anchorages, electric windows all round, electrically adjustable side mirrors, rake-adjustable steering wheel and remote central locking - as well as a full-size spare under the rear of the chassis.

Like all GWM passenger vehicles, the H5 City is backed by a five-year or 100 000km warranty; a five-year 60 000km service plan is a extra-cost option.
