Volvo going big with new XC90

We've always liked the Volvo XC90 because it was an all-wheel drive family wagon that wasn't trying to be a big, bold SUV clone, because of its magic carpet ride, and because of its silky-smooth, remarkably fuel-efficient, six-cylinder engine.

Now, nearly a decade after the launch of Volvo's biggest wagon in 2002 (is it really that long?) the Swedes have released these teaser images of its successor and, oh dear, it's just another Chelsea Tractor - tall, imposing and about as streamlined as a brick outhouse.

All the sketches are slightly different in detail but the basic layout is there; Volvo says this will be the first car to be built using its new Scalable Platform Architecture, which it claims will knock 100-150kg off the weight of each body shell.

The new XC90 will also have only four-cylinder engines (Volvo has previously confirmed there will be no new six-cylinder developments) although we think it's a safe bet most engine options will have direct fuel-injection and turbocharging.

There should be a hybrid as well; given the size of this thing they will need one to keep the Pollution Police quiet.

Expect to see the second-generation XC90 sometime in 2014.
