The S60 and V60 showed that Volvo is putting some real effort into creating cars that are sexier and more dynamic and now the Swedish carmaker is focusing its efforts on the compact premium segment.

Beneath the cover in this official teaser image is Volvo's all-new V40, and though the sheet will only come off to reveal all at the Geneva Motor Show next March, we can see its basic shape and bold, S60-like grille.

Said to be replacing the C30, S40 and V50, the V40 wagon-hatch will have to be a lot of things to a lot of people but its upright shape should make for a practical interior.

It's expected to compete head-on with the BMW 1-Series, Audi A3 and Lexus CT 200h.

No official word on the engine options as yet, but it will almost certainly pack in Volvo's latest range of downsized petrol and diesel engines as seen in the S60 and V60, and perhaps a smaller engine or two as well.
