Paris Motor Show - It seems BMW wants to mark an X on every spot in the SUV market and next on the list is the X2, revealed in concept form at the Paris show.

Think of it as the X6's baby brother

In essence the X2 will be to the X1 what X4 is to X3 and X6 is to X5 - a crossover that's trying to look like a coupé, with plenty of sporty design elements that include a fastback-style C-pillar.

Although we don't know exactly how close the showroom X2 will be to the concept we see here, this design study does imply that the production model will be more distinct from the X1 that it's based on than is the case with X4 and X6.

The X2 concept's proportions are expectedly exaggerated, with its wide stance, 21-inch alloys and oversized bumper elements, but the kidney grille has an interesting new shape that could make it onto the production model and the headlight and taillight designs are likely also very telling.

The showroom version will rival the Range Rover Evoque and will be built on BMW's UKL platform that also underpins the X1 and 2 Series Gran Tourer, meaning that front-wheel drive versions could also be offered.

Engine power will likely come from BMW's latest range of two-litre turbocharged petrol and diesel engines, but it's too early to speculate on a possible M variant, as that division has yet to lay its talented hands on a UKL-platform vehicle.
