Audi wins production car tussle

Cape Town - Top billing at the penultimate round of this year’s Extreme Festival series at Killarney on on Saturday went to the three races for National Production Cars - and they deserved it.

Sasol Audi S4 team-mates Hennie Groenewald and Gennaro Bonafede dominated the opening race after early leader Greame Nathan (VW Golf GTI) stopped with turbo problems, while third and fourth went to Engen Xtreme Audi S4 drivers Michael Stephen and Simon Moss.

Race two, from an inverted grid, saw Charl Smalberger (VW Golf GTI) hold off the combined Audi onslaught to win from Stephen, Groenewald and Moss.

Hennie Groenewald won the third time out, leading home a recovered Graeme Nathan, Michael Stephen and Simon Moss.

VW CUP

Reigning Schampion Sheldon van der Linde won the first race from Tasmin Pepper and Daniel Rowe - but Pepper then went on to win both the second and third races, finishing ahead of Chris Shorter and Sheldon van der Linde, respectively.

Veteran Mathew Hodges posted a third, a fourth and an eighth place on the day, which was enough to clinch the 2015 VWV Cup Masters Title.

FORMULA FORD

The forst of two closely-fought Formula Ford races was won by youngster Julian van der Watt from Robert Wolk and Keagan Masters (each in a Mygale).

Wolk won the second race from Masters and Dewald Brummer, also in a Mygale.

SPORTS AND GT CARS

Both the Crossley & Webb Sports and GT races were won by Charl Arangies in a Lamborghini Gallardo Stradale. Johan Engelbrecht (Porsche GT2R) finished second both times, with the final podium places shared by Francis Caruthers (Juno S53) and Craig Jarvis (Dodge Viper V10) respectively.

KAWASAKI MASTERS

The first Kawasaki Masters race went to Graeme van Breda, ahead of Kyle Robinson and Pieter de Vos, but Van Breda’s ZX-10R picked up a misfire in the second race and he failed to finish, while De Vos and Robinsion fought it out for the win, with De Vos in front when it counted.

THUNDERBIKES

Local hero David ‘McFlash’ McFadden won both Thunderbike races on the Suzuki South GSX-R1000, chased home in Race 1 by current Regional champion Ronald Slamet on the Mike Hopkins ZX-10R and former SA Superbike champion Greg Gildenhuys on a BMW S1000RR

Race 2 was red-flagged when both Keagan Smith (Kawasaki ZX-6R) and David Bolding (PJ One ZX-10R) crashed on lap two. Both were taken to hospital with back and leg injuries.

After the restart McFadden won again, this time from Gildenhuys and Nicholas Grobler, also on a BMW.

The final round of the 2015 Extreme Festival Series will be run at Zwartkops Raceway near Pretoria on Saturday 2 November.
