The tenth stage of this year's Dakar Rally delighted the Argentine home crowd as Orlando Terranova became the first driver from that country to win a Dakar stage.

The BMW X3 driver won the difficult 353-kilometre special stage - between Cordoba and Rioja in Argentina - more than two minutes ahead of the Mini of Nani Roma and the 33-year-old now sits in sixth place overall.

This despite claiming to have taken a relatively calm approach: “We took the stage very easily, to not make a mistake because it was very narrow and it was possible to burst a tyre or break some piece of the car. We want to continue like we have done.”

Overall race leader Stephane Peterhansel (Mini) took third place on the stage, ahead of South Africa's Giniel de Villiers, the Imperial Hilux driver consolidating his second position in the overall results - which was inherited after Nasser al-Attiyah pulled out of the race after suffering mechanical maladies on Monday's stage.

GINIEL EXTENDS GAP

De Villiers had a relatively clean run on Tuesday, although he got caught in the dust of Robbie Gordon's Hummer and decided to push just hard enough to defend his position.

And he did that very well: “After our exciting Monday we enjoyed a comparatively quiet day today,” De Villiers said.

“Although we were slightly hampered by Robby Gordon's dust today, we are pleased we managed to extend the gap to third place. It gives us a useful cushion between us and the next car.”

Wednesday sees competitors tackle a relatively short (217km) stage between La Rioja and Fiambala. Here the forestry sections and some very fast stretches give way to the big white dunes of Fiambala and then dry river beds.
