Cape Speed, the first African team to qualify for the prestigious Formula Student contest at Silverstone in the UK, were placed 65th out of the 132 teams in the competition.

The Cape Peninsula University of Technology team were ranked 27th in the endurance stage of the event.

The Formula Student contest, organised by the Institution of Mechanical Engineers, was held from July 13 to 15.

The Cape Speed team passed the “static” portion of the competition, where they were judged on business presentation skills, costing and sustainability, and the design of their car.

They qualified for the dynamic phase in which they pitted their cars against the other teams in tests, before completing the endurance race on Sunday. - Cape Argus
