Cape Town - If the sound of screeching tyres and the smell of burning rubber gets your engine revving, then DriftCity should be included in your itinerary this weekend.
It’s on from 10 am this Sunday at the Grand Parade, with cool car displays, live acts, top DJs, skaters and the DriftSquad. Cape Town’s most talented drivers will go head-to-head in a contest that combines two of motorsport’s most spectacular disciplines – drifting and gymkhana.
If you thought that drifting was only made famous by The Fast and the Furious’s rendition of Tokyo Drift, think again. Professional drifting competitions have been held worldwide for a number of years and are judged according to speed, angle, showmanship and the lines taken through corners.
Adrift in a world of speed control
Petrolheads can expect to see a balanced mix of drift and gymkhana machines, from slightly modified Nissan 200SXs and Nissan Supras to a Nissan Silvia sport coupé, sliding around the track.
Drivers such as 2015 Regional Supadrift champion Daniel “Danger Dan” Blazer will be up against national Supadrift champion Jason Webb, while European Drift champion Steve “Baggsy” Biagioni will be act as guest judge and commentator.
Baggsy brings a wealth of international expertise as he keeps the crowd entertained with his experience in drifting and gymkhana.
Manoeuvring across a mirrored course, the drivers will have to drift their way around obstacles, through high-speed clipping zones and finally end up in the finishing box.
They will be judged on the time they took, with any infringements such as “straight lining” added to their time as a penalty.
Drivers are encouraged to “drift” the course adding their own flair to earn extra points.
