South Africa’s biggest historic race meeting happens over back-to-next month when the Passion for Speed festival takes place at Zwartkops on February 2 and Kyalami on February 9.

One of the main attractions will be the Race of Champions with Legends Production Cars, where Sarel van der Merwe will battle his big red Galaxie against Hennie Groenewald’s Petty-coloured Plymouth. Also in the mix will be Jaki Scheckter in the Pablo Clark Galaxie, Leroy Poulter in a Ford Thunderbolt and Paolo Cavalieri in his Smokey Yunick Chevelle.

The sound of shrieking Formula One cars will also return to South Africa at the two events when Jean Alesi’s 1993 Ferrari, Michael Schumacher’s ex-Benetton and a Dallara Cosworth hit the tracks at full tilt with Scheckter, Jan Lammers and Andre Bezuidenhout at the wheels.

Bezuidenhout’s Dallara currently holds the outright Zwartkops lap record at 58 seconds, which could tumble next weekend.

Double-header tickets for both weekends are R220 for adults and R140 for kids over 12 if bought through Computicket or at Zwartkops, or R130 and R80 per event separately.

Gate prices are R150 for adults and R100 for kids. Under 12s get in for free. -Star Motoring
