With South Africans doing so well in (and on!) the water at the London Olympics (Cameron van der Burgh, Chad le Clos, our four rower – you legends!), there will also be other local boykies competing on the world stage for us to cheer.

Sheridan Morais, Ronan Quarmby and Mathew Scholtz are all taking part full-time in this year’s World Supersport championship, a supporting event to the premier World Superbike series, and the next round takes place at Britain’s legendary Silverstone circuit on Sunday right in the midst of Olympics fever.

Morais (riding a Lorenzini Kawasaki) and Quarmby (on a PTR Honda) are both former South African Superbike champions chasing their dreams to make it big overseas. Each has shown flashes of brilliance this season with several top-six finishes and a podium apiece. Morais is sixth in the championship on 62 points and Quarmby eighth on 54, and although Turkey’s Kenan Sofuoglu’s 137-point championship lead seems out of reach, with five rounds remaining there is still the possibility of either South African finishing in the top three.

Scholtz (Bogdanka PTR Honda) has endured a trying season so far with just one points finish and, spurred on by SA’s medal-winning swimming performances, might be inspired to deliver a turnaround in fortunes. - Star Motoring
