Pretoria - Fourteen race teams are set to soak up South African sun rays as the annual Sasol Solar Challenge is set to start on September 27th.
The eight-day eco race, which is rated as one of the top events of its kind in the world, will see the fleet of solar-powered vehicles race from Pretoria to Cape Town, with winners determined through various categories that include average time and distance, average energy consumption and average battery use.
“We are extremely proud to partner with an initiative that not only promotes the use of alternative energy sources but encourages young minds to become engaged in engineering, science, business practices and teamwork,” says Sasol sponsorship manager Richard Hughes.
Six local universities and two schools have entered this year’s race, which has also attracted entries from overseas. The public is encouraged to interact with the teams, and 200 schools will be visited along the nationwide route with an aim to raise environmental awareness and boost interest in science, technology, engineering and maths.
